Alfa naj bi 1. aprila na nizozemskem salonu predstavila 180-konjsko verzijo Mita, ki bo zapolnil vrzel med 240-konjsko GTA in sedanjo najmočnejšo verzijo s 155 KM. Imenovala naj bi se Veloce, imela pa bo isti 1.4 turbo motor kot Abarth Grande Punto Essesse in tudi izboljšano vzmetenje ter bremze.

ALFA MITO VELOCE TO DEBUT AT AUTORAI IN AMSTERDAM

At next month's AutoRai in Amsterdam a brand new version of the Alfa MiTo will be presented: the MiTo Veloce will feature 180 bhp as its 1.4 T-Jet turbocharged engine will be in similar specification to the Grande Punto Abarth esseesse. Along with the boost to its power, the MiTo Veloce will feature body styling upgrades as well as new wheels and an enhanced interior.

The new Alfa MiTo Veloce will be substituting at the Netherlands' leading motor show for the absent MiTo GTA concept version which is now on its way to China in time for the Shanghai Motor Show, its second public appearance following on quickly the muscular car's world debut at the 79th Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. It is a curious decision as Alfa Romeo currently doesn't distribute its cars in China while the Netherlands is an established market for the brand where customer demand is always steady.

Under the bonnet of the MiTo Veloce will be the 1.4 T-Jet 16v turbocharged engine that power the top versions of the model's range. Few details have been released but it is known that it will have 180 bhp available. With the MiTo being based on the underpinnings of the Fiat Grande Punto, this will mean that the car is essentially the same as the Grande Punto Abarth in the esseesse kit form which turns out 180 bhp (at 5,750 rpm) and 270 Nm maximum torque and which reaches a top speed of 215 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. It is also reported that this special version will go on sale almost immediately after AutoRAI.

The set-up for AutoRAI 2009 has been changed for this edition so that the cars are divided over six themes instead of being grouped by brand. This concept will provide a clear overview and allow visitors to easily see and compare different vehicles. The six themes are Family and Travel, Convertibles, Luxury and Sports Cars, Adventure, City & Compact and Green Innovations. Meanwhile Amsterdam RAI's largest hall (Hall 1) will host another unique event: AutoRAI Life, a spectacular show featuring the sights, smells and sounds of (racing) cars. In addition, AutoRAI 2009 will feature more cars than ever with over 500 models, including 70 premieres and 20 concept cars. Running simultaneously to AutoRAI, the GoMotor! event will ensure that the motorbike industry also has an impressive presence in Amsterdam this April.

Italijanski mediji poročajo, da naj bi najnovejša Alfa MiTo GTA stala okrog 26 tisoč evrov. Iz torinskega koncerna naj bi nekdo razkril cenik za december 2009, kjer naj bi bila zapisana tudi cena športne Alfe za italijanski trg. Če je cena zares takšna, to pomeni, da bo boj za prodajne številke zelo zanimiv, saj je že Ford za Focusa RS objavil zanimivo ceno, prav tako cenovno primerljiv pa naj bi bil tudi prihajajoči Renault Megane RS.

Samo sta Focus in Megane večja avta kot Mi.to. Malo je draga ta alfica.

Že nekaj mesecev. Pri Alfi so izkoristili državne subvencije, ki se dogajajo povsod v razvitih državah Evrope, za nakup novega avta ob uničenju vašega 10+ let starega avta. S subvencijo in Alfinim popustom pride Nemce najcenejši Mito, kot si ugotovil, 9.900 €. Ista akcija poteka recimo tudi v Veliki Britaniji, kjer stane Mito toliko, kot je tam pred uhuhu leti stala Alfa 33. Nepoučeni pa pravijo, da so "novi avti toook dragi" :)

More power, great design and a sporty heart: Novitec presents an exclusive tuning program for the Alfa Romeo MiTo. Engine tuning for the two diesel models and the gasoline-powered 1.4 TB model is complemented by a new styled aerodynamic-enhancement package. The latter comes with a general operating certificate, eliminating the need for individual technical inspections. Also available from Novitec are 18-inch wheels and a height-adjustable coil-over suspension.

Novitec Powerjet 2 is the name of the recipe that increases power output of the MiTo with 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine by 31 hp (23 kW). Peak torque grows by 30 Nm. The plug-and-play auxiliary control unit can be installed in less than five minutes. The tuned MiTo produces 186 hp (137 kW) and is even more agile: With a sprint time of 7.4 seconds from rest to 100 km/h the tuned 1.4 TB bests its production counterpart by about 0.7 seconds.

Novitec power tuning is also available for the two turbodiesel models. The easy-to-install Novitec Powerrail 5 module boosts power output of the 1.3 JTD model from standard 90 hp (66 kW) to 110 hp (81 kW). The same auxiliary control module when installed in the MiTo 1.6 JTD produces an additional 24 hp (17.7 kW). The tuning module also markedly increases peak torque by some 50 Nm.

Novitec adds further sporty highlights with an aerodynamic-enhancement kit for the smallest Alfa Romeo model. The body kit comes with a general operating certificate which eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming individual technical inspections. The front of the MiTo receives a striking facelift with spoiler corners left and right plus a centrally mounted cup spoiler.

Novitec rocker panels give the compact car an even lower, sleeker side appearance. The rear of the MiTo is refined with the Novitec roof spoiler and diffuser for the rear apron. The rear component is also designed to surround the Novitec sport rear muffler. The stainless-steel exhausts were developed for maximum power yield and a more exciting exhaust note. They can be combined with one, two or four tailpipes.

The sporty new look also includes Novitec N8 multi-spoke wheels. The 7.5Jx18 wheels are available painted silver or matte black. Pirelli high-performance tires in size 215/35 R 18 were selected as the optimal tyre choice. Novitec sport springs lower the ride height of the MiTo by some 40 millimeters. As an alternative, Novitec offers a stainless-steel coil-over suspension with adjustable ride height and adjustable dampers. It gives the Alfa Romeo a firmer ride and a ride-height lowering between 35 and 65 millimeters.

“MultiAir” uveden v Alfo Romeo MiTo
Le leto po praznovanju stoletnice in v znamenju napredne tehnologije in odličnih zmogljivosti, Alfa Romeo v septembru napoveduje začetek prodaje Alfe Romeo MiTo z 1.4 Turbo bencinskimi MultiAir motorji. Gre za revolucionarno tehnologijo, ki so jo razvili in patentirali v FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies. To razširja paleto zmagovalnega modela, za katerega je bilo od lansiranja zbranih 60.000 naročil v 34 državah na petih kontinentih.

Novi agregati so pomembna prelomna točka v razvoju bencinskih motorjev, tako kot je bila uvedba tehnologije skupnega voda “Common Rail” pri dizelskih motorjih v vozilu Alfa Romeo 156 leta 1997. Dovolj zgovoren je podatek, da v primerjavi z običajnimi bencinskimi motorji z enakimi karakteristikami, motorji MultiAir zagotavljajo večjo moč (do 10%) in navor (do 15%) ter nižjo porabo (do 10%), nižji izpust CO2 (do 10%), manj trdih delcev (do 40%) in nižji NOx (do 60%).

Srce MultiAir-a je novi elektrohidravlični sistem prilagodljivega delovanja ventilov, ki omogoča znižanje porabe (zahvaljujoč neposrednemu nadzoru zraka na sesalnih ventilih brez uporabe dušilne lopute) in znižanje emisij (zahvaljujoč nadzoru pri izgorevanju). Poleg tega je tehnologija MultiAir v skladu s konceptom zmanjševanja prostornine (“downsizing”) in jo je mogoče brez težav uporabiti pri bencinskih motorjih, v prihodnosti pa jo bo mogoče prilagoditi tudi za dizelske.

Prvi v revolucionarni družini je MultiAir 1.400 16v, atmosferski in s turbinskim polnilnikom, ki bo v modelu Alfa Romeo MiTo na voljo v treh različicah (77 kW / 105 KM, 99,5 kW /135 KM, 125 kW/170 KM) ter v kombinaciji s 5 ali 6 stopenjskim ročnim menjalnikom. Prvi dve različici bosta na voljo za vsa vozila MiTo v paleti, najmočnejša različica pa bo na voljo v posebni seriji “Quadrifoglio Verde” (zelena štiripeserna deteljica).

Novi motorji MultiAir prihajajo iz v tovarne FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies v Termoli. Bili so zasnovani tako, da omogočajo nadaljnji razvoj potenciala, ki ga ima Alfa DNA – naprava, ki omogoča prilagoditev osebnosti Alfe Romeo MiTo z željami voznika ter voznim razmeram. V »najbolj športnem kompaktnem vozilu doslej« se bo, hkrati z motorjem MultiAir, uvedel tudi sistem Start&Stop. Gre za sistem, ki skrbi za ugašanje in ponoven zagon motorja (na primer, ko vozilo stoji zaradi rdeče luči na semaforju), hkrati pa v tem času ohranja nemoteno delovanje vseh naprav v vozilu, ki skrbijo za udobje potnikov.

Alfa Romeo, always a byword for sophisticated engineering and high-performing engines, proudly presents the revolutionary MultiAir system, developed and patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies. The forerunner of this revolutionary family is the MultiAir 1.4 engine, first introduced to the world on the Alfa Romeo MiTo model and offered with 3 different power levels (105 HP, 135 HP and 170 HP), all Euro 5-ready.

The torque delivery of the 135 HP engine is optimum under all conditions and ensures outstanding p... performance and vigorous thrust at all speeds, marking a new benchmark in the petrol engine scenario. The new 135 HP power unit's top speed and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h are at the very top of the mini category.

This brand-new power unit, designed to work in conjunction with the Alfa DNA device, allows the excellent dynamic attributes of the Alfa MiTo to be exploited to the full. This makes long trips satisfying and comfortable but also guarantees plenty of thrills on more demanding stretches of road, the natural terrain of any Alfa Romeo, due to the well-balanced weight/power ratio and the excellent speed of response to the driver's commands. This marks the reappearance of one of the historical symbols most dear to Alfa aficionados throughout the world, who are passionate about the glorious past of a brand that has made a trademark out of racing and motorsport. The 170 HP 1.4 MiTo unit exemplifies a new concept of sportiness, combining superlative driving satisfaction with eco-awareness. The winning features of this car include its outstanding weight/power ratio (6.7 kg/hp), guaranteeing record-braking agility, plus an exceptional specific power of 124 hp/litre, a real first for this category. This is also the highest value ever recorded for an Alfa car, affirming the excellent engineering heritage of the Alfa Mito.

The 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbobenzina, combined with a new 6-speed gearbox guaranteeing fast shifts with short travels, is an excellent example of the philosophy of downsizing: producing very hi-tech turbocharged engines to increase performance while slashing fuel consumption and emissions. The results achieved by following this strategy are interesting by any standard (139 g/km of CO2 and 4.8 l/100km over the extraurban cycle), closer to what you would expect from a mini than a sporty hatchback capable of speeding from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo “Quadrifoglio Verde” is also equipped with a new active suspension system that controls the shock absorbers to redefine the vehicle's dynamics, reduce car oscillations under all driving conditions and raise levels of safety, comfort and handling still further. The system, developed as a joint venture between Alfa Romeo and Magneti Marelli, is able to call on the extraordinary experience both companies have accrued in motorsport throughout the world.

The new MultiAir engines are built in Termoli (CB) in the FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies plant and designed from the development stage to further enhance the Alfa DNA selector, the device that allows the personality of the Alfa Romeo MiTo to be adapted to the driver's needs and different road conditions. The “Start&Stop” system, making its debut combined with MultiAir engines for the first time on an Alfa Romeo, temporarily turns off the engine and then restarts it (when waiting at a traffic light, for example) to guarantee reduced fuel consumption and low noise levels in the passenger compartment when the device is at work. The sound performance of the MultiAir engines can be appreciated to the full, with a sporty, unmistakeable Alfa Romeo timbre.

The introduction of the new MultiAir engines has also brought fresh colours to the MiTo, a winning model that is already sold in 34 countries throughout the world and 5 different continents. It can already be ordered in the new metallic shade Tornado Blue, which will complement the already extensive array of exterior colours. The model's level of engineering can also be appreciated due to a series of improvements that have further increased the quality of the Alfa Romeo MiTo. The improvements affect the interior finish, car outfit combinations, gear manoeuvrability due to shortening the lever to 2.5 centimetres and also the steering and suspension system, which benefits from a new setting, in addition to some changes to the braking system.

All the secrets of MultiAir technology

Alfa Romeo proudly introduces MultiAir technology to the world on its latest creation, the Alfa Romeo MiTo. The forerunner of the new family is the MultiAir 1.4 engine, available in 3 different power levels on the new model: 105 HP, 135 HP and 170 HP. This marks a significant generational leap compared to current petrol engines, as occurred in 1997 with the Common Rail applied to diesel power units and introduced to the world for the first time on the Alfa Romeo 156. Now comes the turn of the 'sportiest mini ever' to p... up the baton and mark a true leap of technology: the MultiAir system takes the controlled ignition engine to previously unthinkable levels of efficiency. This is achieved due to the principle underpinning this new technology: the possibility of continuously adjusting the main elements that guarantee optimum combustion at any speed and under all driving conditions.

In particular, the possibility of managing the most appropriate moment for opening and closing the intake valve has optimised the engine's volumetric efficiency, bringing benefits in terms of maximum torque delivery, particularly at low speed: compared to a conventional 120 HP turbo petrol engine, the same engine with MultiAir achieves an increase in maximum power (135 HP) without penalising torque and response at low engine speed (5000 rpm).

The introduction of MultiAir technology therefore makes the Alfa Romeo MiTo even more agile and spirited due to the power and torque increases possible with the new power units. The engines also guarantee a significant reduction in fuel consumption and polluting emissions for benefits in terms of running costs and respect for the environment. For example, the flexibility and speed of response guaranteed by the MultiAir system make it possible to manage engine load by means of the intake valves, eliminating the use of the throttle valve to benefit combustion efficiency at partial loads and hence fuel consumption. Suffice it to say that the same power unit reduces fuel consumption over an NEDC cycle by up to 10% compared to a conventional 120 HP turbo petrol unit. The new power units represent a significant point of departure from the current petrol engine scenario. For example, compared to a conventional petrol engine of the same capacity, MultiAir guarantees an increase in power (up to 10%) and torque (up to15%), in addition to a significant reduction in fuel consumption (up to 10%) and emissions of CO 2 (up to 10%), particulate (up to 40%) and NOx (up to 60%).

The heart of the MultiAir is a new electrohydraulic valve management system that allows a reduction in fuel consumption (by controlling air directly via the engine intake valves, without using the throttle) and polluting emissions (via combustion control). As befits a flag-bearer for the downsizing concept, the MultiAir is a versatile system that is easily applicable to all petrol engines that may potentially be developed for diesel engines in the future. Load management by means of the intake valves also means that combustion can also optimised even during motorway use. The area within which the mixture is made richer has been greatly limited by exploiting system characteristics: the fuel-air mixture is still stoichiometric at 150 km/h, for example with particularly low specific consumption. The new generation of MultiAir power units has also been designed to enhance the car set-up options available via the Alfa DNA selector to ensure the most effective response to the driver's expectations and the different road conditions.

Why MultiAir

Over recent years, the controlled ignition engine has undergone continual development to regain competitiveness with present-day turbodiesel engines that have revolutionised the world scenario due to the advent of Common Rail technology. Until now, petrol engines were subject to two limitations that had to be removed to ensure the necessary leap in efficiency. Firstly, the throttle valve restriction: a system for modulating the power required by the driver that is simple yet inefficient due to the consequent load loss, above all at speeds when the valve is hardly opened, i.e, within the service range typical of normal driving. The second limitation was represented by the reduced freedom of operation of the intake valves, which often meant engineers had to configure the personality of the power unit by choosing between a sporty timing setting or a set-up more conscious of fuel consumption, or prioritising comfort and torque at intermediate speeds or focusing on power at high speeds and the lengthening more typical of a lively drive.

These two limitations were finally removed with the advent of MultiAir technology: the credit for this goes to the ingenious system patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which allows the valve lift and opening time to be managed in accordance with numerous operating parameters that are analysed and processed in real time, thus allowing the engine to choose the best possible configuration to meet the driver's requests moment by moment.

The new power units featuring MultiAir technology are therefore standard bearers for the concept of downsizing, which combines applied efficiency with peak performance. The resulting benefits are truly numerous when compared with conventional engines with the same cylinder capacity: including an increase in maximum power (up to 10%), an increase in torque (up to 15%) at low speed and during transients due to the advanced power unit operating parameter control strategies. And more: a reduction in fuel consumption of more than 10% (due to doing away with pumping loss and the accurate calibration of parameters optimising fuel combustion) and CO2 emissions (up to 10%), particulate (up to 40%) and NOx (up to 60%), due to optimisation of valve control strategies during the engine intake phase and internal exhaust gas recycling. In other words, outstanding performance, complemented by a very prompt response to accelerator commands due to the constant air pressure upstream of the cylinders combined with extremely fast control of the intake valves. Not to mention the fact that the MultiAir engines fitted to the Alfa Romeo MiTo are the first to feature the innovative “Start&Stop” system that automatically turns off the power unit when the car is at a standstill (at a traffic light, for example) maintaining all vehicle systems in operation to ensure the greatest comfort to all occupants.

The new MultiAir engines are designed from the development stage to further enhance the Alfa DNA selector, the device that allows the personality of the Alfa Romeo MiTo to be adapted to the driver's needs and different road conditions. More specifically, when the selector is in “Dynamic” position, the engine response is immediate, delivery is substantial due to the overboost, the Electronic Q2 allows corners to be tackled in complete safety, ensuring a performance in line with the sporty spirit of all Alfa Romeo cars. With the selector in “Normal”, position, everyday driving becomes fun without giving up on comfort and a smooth drive. Fuel consumption is also minimised. Under slippery conditions, active safety can be further increased by selecting an “All Weather” position that alerts all the car's safety systems (including VDC and Electronic Q2), which are ready to leap into action in case of need for a smoother engine response.

How the MultiAir system works

The project aim was ambitious: to allow the intake valves to be controlled without their strict dependency on the camshaft, which has nearly always represented the only way to ensure their operation over more than 100 years of technological development. Achieving this goal was possible only by the valuable wealth of technological and human experience built up over the years by the Alfa Romeo brand and Fiat Powertrain Technologies on ordinary roads and race tracks. It is therefore no exaggeration to claim that MultiAir is a distillate of the exceptional technological pathway that allowed the Italian motoring industry to make its name on roads and racetracks throughout the world. It is enough to remind ourselves of some of these innovations, which stand as milestones in the history of the motor car: production of the first aluminium twin shaft engine on a mass produced car (Alfa Romeo Giulia), the use of twin variable valve timing and the Twin Spark (Alfa Romeo 75), the first modular engine (Alfetta) and the Common Rail system (Alfa Romeo 156). And now the Alfa Romeo MiTo extends this extraordinary list of achievements with the MultiAir system, a versatile technology that is easily applicable to all petrol engines that may potentially be developed for diesel engines in the future.

On conventional petrol engines, load is controlled by modulating the density of air taken into the cylinders by means of the throttle valve. This determines an efficiency loss known as "pumping work". The MultiAir system does away with this loss. The load is controlled by adjusting the volume of air added at constant density temperature due to direct and extremely flexible control of the intake valves. The system controls the intake valves by means of an electrohydraulic system: a piston operated by a mechanical cam is connected to the intake valve by means of a hydraulic chamber controlled by a normally open solenoid valve. Two situations may arise: when the solenoid valve is closed, the fluid in the hydraulic chamber acts as a solid body and transmits the lift law imposed by the mechanical intake cam to the intake valves. In the second case, however, when the solenoid valve is open, fluid in the hydraulic chamber can flow out toward a low-pressure circuit: as a consequence, the intake valves no longer follow the mechanical cam profile and close under the effect of the two intake spring force. The final part of the valve closure travel is managed by a dedicated hydraulic brake that ensures a controlled approach stage under all service conditions. It is therefore possible to obtain innumerable intake valve opening profiles with ease by adjusting the solenoid valve opening and closure times. In this way, engine load is controlled directly via the intake valves and no longer via the throttle valve.

The behaviour of the MultiAir in three different situations is described by: 1) Maximum power delivery stage: the solenoid valve is permanently closed and the valves are fully opened by following the entire profile of the mechanical cam, which is specifically optimised for power at high speeds (long intake valve opening intervals); 2) At low rpm and full load: the solenoid valve opens ahead of the theoretical cam profile, closing the intake valve prematurely. This does away with undesirable flow back into the manifold, maximising the air mass trapped in the cylinders; 3) Under partial engine load conditions: the solenoid valve opens during the intake travel to partly open the valves and control the incoming air mass on the basis of the torque requirement. Alternatively, the valves may be partly opened to close the solenoid wvalveith a delay in relation to the beginning of the theoretical profile guaranteed by the mechanical cam. In this case, the speed of the air flow entering the cylinders is higher and generates a particularly high level of swirl in the cylinders. It is also possible to combine these two operating modes for the same intake event: this gives rise to the “Multilift” effect, which increases swirl and combustion speed at very low loads and speeds. To sum up, the flexibility and speed of response guaranteed by the MultiAir system make it possible to manage engine load by means of the intake valves, eliminating the use of the throttle valve to benefit combustion efficiency at partial loads and hence fuel consumption.
"Start&Stop" and "GSI": driving satisfaction and respect for the environment
The whole world envies Italian car makers their ability to produce units full of guts and temperament, veritable gems of technology that represent the state of the art in terms of engineering, performance and respect for the environment. And the new MultiAir family is no exception: Alfa Romeo has chosen to combine these power units with two innovative features able to combine driving satisfaction and respect for the environment: the “Start&Stop” system and the Gear Shift Indicator (GSI).

“Start&Stop”

Available as standard on three MiTo MultiAir petrol models, the Start&Stop system controls temporary engine cut-off and subsequent restarting when the engine is idling at a standstill. In these situations, which are typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when halted at traffic lights, and when the control strategy permits, the system automatically cuts out the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions up to 10% for an urban route and 3.5% over an NEDC type approval cycle. As soon as the brake pedal is released or a gear engaged, the system then quickly restarts the engine to ensure the user an immediate response to controls. If the engine is turned off by mistake (stalls), when setting off from a traffic light, it can be restarted by simply pressing the clutch. The Start&Stop system offers further advantages in terms of passenger compartment comfort because there are no vibrations or noises. The driver is also informed about the use of the device by means of messages on the control panel and can always turn it off using a control on the panel near the steering wheel.

Gear Shift Indicator (GSI)

The Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) linked to the “Start&Stop” is a kind of co-pilot that discreetly suggests to drivers when they should change gear, leading to more efficient use of the power unit in terms of fuel consumption. For example, the GSI may suggest shifting to a higher gear by means of a message on the control panel in order to allow the engine to guarantee combustion with a leaner mixture , i.e. containing less fuel, or to shift down a gear to make the best use of the available torque. The device is permanently active when the Alfa DNA selector is set to “Normal” or “All Weather” in order to ensure a smooth and comfortable drive while also aiming to save fuel and slash emissions.

The new Alfa MiTo range

The Alfa Romeo colour range is being extended to mark the launch of the MultiAir engines due to the introduction of the new metallic shade. The new Tornado Blue shade will be added to the current available colours, increasing the possible combinations between exterior and interior environments. It should be emphasised that the Alfa Romeo MiTo it is now offering some new features to further increase its quality level. Through constant contact with customers and careful development work by a team of dedicated engineers, numerous technical developments in the field of interior trim and vehicle outfit matches have been designed and implemented. Gearbox manoeuvrability has also been improved by redefining and shortening the gear lever down to 25 mm according to the version. Lastly, to optimise driving comfort perceived by the customer, a new steering and suspension setting has been introduced in addition to certain changes to the braking system.

To sum up, the Alfa Romeo MiTo offers 2 turbodiesel (90 HP 1.3 JTDM and 120 HP 1.6 JTDM) and complements the current petrol engine range (the 78 HP, 120 HP and 155 HP 1.4 unit) with two new MultiAir engines: the 105 HP 1.4 and the 135 HP 1.4 Turbobenzina. This model, a veritable distillate of technology, offers two outfits (Progression and Distinctive); two special packs available on Distinctive versions, one with more sporty content, the other more geared to comfort; 7 different seat trims plus top-quality “Pelle Frau” upholstery in three different shades; 2 interior colours with Sprint dashboard on the Progression outfit; 3 interior colours with Competizione dashboard on the Distinctive outfit. Five different alloy wheels are also available (16”, 17’’ and 18”) and 10 different body shades that reflect every facet of the new Alfa Romeo's sporting spirit. These are combined with a multitude of taillights and headlight frame colours: chrome plated, satinised, titanium grey or body coloured, offering customers a host of personalisation options.

QUADRIFOGLIO VERDE DESIGNATION RETURNS TO DENOTE RANGE TOPPING MITO

Available following the launch of the 105 and 135 hp MultiAir engines, the world premiere of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde with 170 hp 1.4 MultiAir TBi takes place in Frankfurt. The exclusive trim brings back a legendary symbol that over the years has appeared on some of Alfa Romeo's sportiest cars. Having always been synonymous with heritage, racing and victory, the “Quadrifoglio Verde” (four-leaf clover) now represents a new kind of sportiness that combines maximum driving pleasure with improved environmental qualities.

Bearing the Quadrifoglio Verde is this MiTo with the most powerful 170 hp MultiAir engine and innovative solutions that accentuate the existing qualities of the model: hold, agility, active safety and driveability are heightened by an engine with one of the highest specific power values in the world and a chassis with features hitherto unthinkable for a car in this class.

This engine's best feature is its outstanding weight/power ratio, which has always been one of the key factors behind Alfa Romeo's success on the road and the racetrack. The class-leading ratio of 6.7 kg/hp is almost 10 per cent better than the already excellent performance of the current 155 hp 1.4 TBi. At 124 hp/litre, this engine is also one of the world leaders in specific power. In fact, this is the highest value ever recorded for an Alfa car, affirming the excellent engineering heritage of the Alfa MiTo.

This is a particularly important value because it proves the effectiveness of downsizing, aimed at producing high-tech engines to get better performance allied with sharp reductions in fuel consumption and emissions. Indeed, it is this latter area which provides the most surprising evidence of the technical level achieved: 4.8 l/100 km and 139 g/km of CO2 (in the extra-urban cycle) are closer to what you would expect from an economy car than a compact sports car that goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds.

On the back of these exceptional power qualities and the unbeatable performance/consumption ratio, Alfa Romeo decided to give a sporty and technological feel to this Quadrifoglio Verde version with high-quality finishes, attention to detail and a raft of features. One example is the 17" satin titanium-finished wheels (based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione supercar). The same colour is used for the headlight frames and the wing mirrors, while the dark finish of the headlight parabolas is achieved by a brand new metal sublimation technology. The interior also has a refined sporty feel thanks to the all-black environment that ensures no reflections or distractions while driving. The technological aspect of this car is further enhanced by the sporty fabric used to upholster the seats, the modern dashboard and the white lighting on the instrument panel. It should also be stressed that Alfa Romeo has developed an innovative chassis upgrade to further emphasise the dynamic qualities of the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde.

Dynamic Suspension

Competitive racing has always been a testing ground for new technologies, which have found their way from the world's most famous racetracks to standard road cars. One example of this passage between two seemingly very different worlds is dynamic suspension. This system, which actively and continuously controls the electronic shock absorbers, was developed by combining Alfa Romeo road testing with the latest engineering techniques from Magneti Marelli. So, using experience gained on the racetrack, the system allows the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde to excel even further in terms of agility and handling, giving it exceptional driveability and unparalleled safety. The driver gets three benefits from the Dynamic Suspension system: comfort, safety and agility. Above all, the electronic shock absorbers adapt to the road conditions and control all the car's movements. This guarantees maximum comfort and ensures that the unevenness of road surfaces is fully absorbed. In addition, the Dynamic Suspension system always ensures maximum grip and safety by actively responding to all road conditions. Finally, because roll and pitch are more restricted in all conditions, there is better stability and cornering that adds to the undoubted agility of the Alfa Romeo MiTo.

The suspension interacts perfectly with the three different control strategies of the Alfa DNA system. In “Normal”, agility is combined with a higher level of comfort, whereas in "All Weather", the safety features are enhanced by continual interaction between the Vehicle Dynamic Control stability system, the steering and the suspension. Finally, in “Dynamic”, the MiTo becomes a true sports car clinging to the ground and fit for any road: it is no coincidence that the system was developed at the historic Balocco test track and round the corners of the Nurburgring. So, thanks to the hard work of Alfa Romeo and Magneti Marelli, the car is responsive and reliable when you turn the steering wheel or put your foot on the accelerator. The innovative Dynamic Suspension system is made up of four electronically controlled shock absorbers, five accelerometric sensors, a control unit and an interface with Alfa DNA for the different settings and with the other on-board electronic systems.

Its main feature is to actively and continuously control the response of the shock absorbers, which adapt depending on the movement of the car and the road conditions, as well as the driving style. To sum up, the Dynamic Suspension system better protects passengers from uneven road surfaces thanks to an effective filtering and optimises comfort by recognising an obstacle (such as a bump or a hole) and adapting suspension behaviour accordingly. The system also ensures better cornering by altering damping distribution of the four shock absorbers, enhancing handling and hold thanks to advanced lateral dynamic control. What's more, the Dynamic Suspension system manages longitudinal dynamic control by adjusting the movement of the chassis during acceleration, braking and gear changes, and by integrating perfectly with the Vehicle Dynamic Control, steering and braking systems.

The new six-speed C635 gearbox

The technological qualities of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde are further enhanced by the next-generation C635 gearbox. Developed by FPT and manufactured at the Verrone factory in Italy, this groundbreaking mechanical unit is the first result of a design philosophy aimed at improving driveability, consumption levels and production flexibility. As far as driveability is concerned, the new gearbox ensures clean and swift changes with very short selection movements, uniform activation pressures, no noise and no vibrations. In addition, modern design and construction techniques help to significantly reduce consumption levels thanks to less friction and the best possible gear ratios. Its appearance in the Alfa MiTo 170 hp 1.4 MultiAir TBi marks the debut of a modern family of gearboxes adapted for a broad range of models.

SPECIAL ALFA MITO FLEET FOR THE EUROPEAN MASERATI DEALER NETWORK

One hundred Alfa Romeo MiTos, produced exclusively for Maserati’s service network will soon be circulating on roads throughout Europe. For Maserati, the Alfa Romeo MiTo is the perfect “Courtesy Car” for customers who clearly appreciate Italian style and unique products.

The special fleet of Alfa MiTos will be marked out by their Maserati Ocean Blue body colour, and will be equipped with the most powerful engine in the entire MiTo range – the very lively, 170 HP, 1.4 MultiAir Turbo petrol unit. In addition to their special body colour, the MiTos will feature another two exclusive details: a ‘Limited Edition’ plate fitted to the air conditioning system and special aluminium kick plates bearing the words “Alfa Romeo for Maserati”.

All one hundred cars will feature be generously equipped: Frau leather seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, a leather steering wheel with radio and telephone controls, a map-based Radionavigation unit with maps covering the whole of Europe, the Blue&Me hands-free system with USB port, and bi-xenon headlights.

The "MiTo for Maserati" will also stand out due to its exceptional sporting performance. It is fitted as standard with 18 inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a sporty rear bumper and aluminium pedal unit. They will also be fitted as standard with Dynamic Suspension, the advanced electronic control system that varies suspension configuration actively and continuously according to road conditions and driver input, ensuring lightning-quick cornering and amazing sensitivity.

Thanks to this special initiative with Alfa Romeo, Maserati’s European service network will be able to offer its customers a very special car, completely in line with Maserati philosophy, according to which even the smallest detail is meticulously and attentively chosen.
